Gulf Coast Tarpon

Tarpon in Texas are a matter of timing and tolerance for disappointment. They pass along the beachfront and through the passes from roughly July into October, they are large, and they are entirely uninterested in cooperating with a schedule.

The fish move in strings just outside the first bar, often within a long cast of a boat sitting quietly with the engine off. Water clarity determines everything. A green tide and light wind gives you a chance; a brown chop gives you a boat ride.

The presentation is unlike any other saltwater fishing in the state. Cast well ahead of the lead fish, let the fly sink to their level, and strip steadily — never up and away. Tarpon eat with deliberation and reject with more. When one does take, strip-set hard and repeatedly, then get the rod low and to the side.

Flies: toad patterns in black and purple, a chartreuse-and-white baitfish, tied on strong 2/0 to 3/0 hooks with fluorocarbon shock. Ten- to twelve-weight. Check your knots more often than you think you need to.
