Most of the fly fishing writing worth reading was written about cold water. Trout streams in Montana, Atlantic salmon, chalk streams in Hampshire. Texas has almost none of that, and it has a great deal of everything else: a six-hundred-mile coast of shallow bays, more than a million stock tanks, Hill Country rivers full of a bass that lives nowhere else on earth, and a redfish population that will take a fly in eight inches of water.

This journal covers that water. Warm fresh water and Gulf salt, fly rod only, written for people who would rather understand a technique than be told to try it.

What you will find here

Pieces on technique that explain the reasoning — why a slow retrieve produces larger trout, why a crab fly must stop moving before a redfish can eat it, why a small pond fishes differently than a reservoir arm. Species guides for the fish worth planning a day around. Occasional writing about places, when a place is the point.
